Higher quality flex pipes will be made of stainless steel. In many cases, it is difficult to tell the part number or the model number, without having the OEM list from the car manufacturer. Designed for exhaust applications the flexible exhaust pipe absorbs engine vibrations and will accept both axial and bending movements. Manufactured in stainless steel the flexible pipe can withstand temperatures of up to 550 C. The flexible pipe is sold by the metre but can be cut to specific lengths upon request. The flexible exhaust pipe can be fitted to solid pipe using the Western Tydens range of flex clamps.
I don’t run flex pipes and have never had a problem. I don’t hard mount the exhaust to the frame either though. Slide the pipe from the muffler over the existing exhaust pipe. The muffler should rest directly below the rubber eyelets its mounted to, so the eyelet should hang straight up and down when the pipes are joined properly. If the two pipes feel loose or can be wiggled, you will need an adaptor to match the correct size. Most exhaust piping comes in two or two-and-a-half-inch diameters. The muffler will have metal prongs sticking out of the top that slide into rubber eyelets below the body of the car. You may have to push the prongs through the rubber with a bit of force to get past the initial ridge.
If you can’t find the leak in the exhaust pipe with a visual inspection, leave the vehicle jacked up and start the engine. With the engine running, you should be able to quickly and easily identify the source of the leak. If you aren’t able to easily identify the leak in the exhaust pipe, use the vantage point you gained jacking up the vehicle to visually inspect the piping and muffler. Look for signs of damage that may indicate a leak such a deep rusting, cracks, scrapes or holes. Detach the exhaust pipe from the exhaust manifold from beneath your Volvo. The exhaust pipe links to the manifold with two bolts, which can also be taken off with a common wrench. Next, pull out the exhaust manifold and detach the exhaust pipe’s hanger.
Make sure to coat the perimeter of the patch with epoxy at the least to ensure there are no pinhole leaks. Make sure none of the leak extends beyond the sides of the patch. Apply the epoxy to an area surrounding the leak that is equal size to the patch you are applying. Wrapping the can or patch all the way around the pipe will provide the best seal. If you purchase a patch kit, make sure to read the directions to assess the size of a leak the kit can fix. If the area that needs to be patched is larger than about three inches, that portion of the exhaust will likely need to be replaced. Different types of epoxy have different curing rates, so read the instructions on the package to know how long to allow it to sit before driving the vehicle. If you are using epoxy to seal the leak, mix the two parts together using a wooden dowel. Once the two parts are mixed, it will begin to cure immediately, so apply it to the leak quickly.
Don’t be in haste, and make the mistake of placing your jack on a sandy place or grasses. The weight of the vehicle will eventually cause the jack to give way, or sink into the ground. And that could be dangerous for anyone lying underneath the car in such a condition. Proposition 65 requires businesses to provide warnings to Californians about significant exposures to chemicals that cause cancer, birth defects or other reproductive harm. These chemicals can be in the products that Californians purchase, in their homes or workplaces, or that are released into the environment. Any wrap except for our specially formulated Inferno Header Wrap will become brittle and lose integrity if it is operated above its maximum continuous operating temperature too often and for too long. Find Walker® products with our easy part finder or by your interchange number. Determine the length (X”) of pipe needed for your application by measuring the gap between the two pipes you intend to connect. Walker® Flex Pipe is available in galvanized, aluminized, or stainless steel to meet the specific needs of your vehicle. For everything from repairs and stock replacement flex joints, to extreme custom exhausts for hardcore racing, Summit has you covered with parts from trusted manufacturers.
Moreover, there is no need to remove the whole exhaust system. Only to cut out the failed exhaust flex pipe and install a new spare part using the welding method or clumps instead would be enough. I fixed my problem by purchasing a Nickson Flat Band Exhaust Clamp at Advance Auto, along with some Hi Temp exhaust sealer putty. Nobody carried the diameter clamp I needed, so I purchased a large one and cut it down to size. After grinding the rust off the cracked exhaust pipes, I coated it liberally with exhaust putty and installed the clamp. The 2 pipes are totally separate, but right next to each other. My exhaust pipe in my 2007 maxima has a crack about an inch outside of a flex pipe, and the repair cost is more than the car is worth to me. My engine and transmission are mounted on poly bushings.
Be very careful not to drip acetone into your eyes or mouth while wiping down the pipe with it. If you are using exhaust tape, make sure to scrub the pipe all the way around with the sand paper. Scrub the entire portion of the pipe around the leak, including the top side if you can reach it. Cracks in the piping are another common cause of exhaust leaks. Slide a scissor or trolley jack below the vehicle at one of its designated jack points. If you are unsure where these jack points are, refer to the vehicle’s owner’s manual to help you locate them. With the jack in the correct space, jack up the car until it is high enough to safely work beneath it.
On some engines, the flex pipe may use slip joints with a clamp at one or both ends; requiring the need for some exhaust tools to replace well. The flex pipe usually fails by breaking internally, which then, causes an exhaust leak and noise. This engine is a V-6 and the flex pipe is part of a sturdy y-pipe that joins the two exhaust banks. This is less suitable for a cheaper aftermarket universal flex pipe that could be welded in. The labor time to replace the flex pipe is estimated at 0.8 of an hour. On this vehicle, it is a component on an exhaust pipe section that includes the rear catalytic converter. To get an idea of the average cost of exhaust flex pipe repair is a little difficult, as it can vary widely. So, always make sure your exhaust pipe is in order before you hit the road. You can have a professional check your exhaust, together with other parts of your vehicle occasionally. The thing is, you can’t be sure when the exhaust will finally become broken or starts leaking.
The O2 sensor information is the basic data the PCM uses to determine fuel mixtures, and that can be thrown off if there are exhaust leaks. Flex pipes can be a short bolt-on unit with flanges on either end, which makes replacement fairly simple. Sometimes, flex pipes are built into a larger exhaust assembly. In all cases, there would likely be some additional flange gaskets and miscellaneous fasteners which could yield a relatively small additional cost. The bolts that attach the flanges of exhaust pipes are very prone to heat stress and rust issues and are normally replaced when they have to be removed. There would also be the option of having an exhaust shop cut out the old flex pipe and welding in a new one, which might cost around $50 for a universal Walker part and an hour of labor. An average cost to have a universal flex pipe welded in at an exhaust shop might be about $200.
I had never welded before, but it wasn’t as hard as I thought. It was $100 or so, but now I have a welder, and a car that sounds good. Note that you might still need something to put over any holes. It’s near impossible to patch more than about the thin side of a quarter. Personally, I’ve never had much success with any type of bonding compound. Since the exhaust heats up considerably, the pipe will expand and contract, which tends to foil any plans relating to compound. Here are a few other methods that I’ve found to work better though. There are a couple hack-y fixes for exhaust problems, especially since the exhaust system isn’t a crucial part of the car and the world won’t fall apart if it breaks again. FWIW, on my truggy I’m running all V-bands and my exhaust is hung, but it’s a steel strap – so not much give.
The hanger is in charge of holding the exhaust pipe to your Volvo’s frame. It is usually positioned near the back of your Volvo. The exhaust pipes hold a good amount of space within and through your Volvo’s exhaust system. These exhaust pipes, which can be metal or aluminum, are in control of distributing the burning exhaust fumes from the engine and exhaust manifold and pushing them through your Volvo’s tailpipe.
